GTM Sportswear got an inside look at cheerleading during the 2012 summer Olympics. Matt Jones, GTM Sales Representative and Hofstra University cheer coach, performed for the U.S. basketball team in London.
Here’s what we learned:
Q: How long have you been with GTM Sportswear?
A: Since 2/7/12.
Q: How did you first get interested in cheerleading?
A: In high school, the girls on the team dragged me to a practice to throw them and I got hooked.
Q: How are you currently involved with cheerleading?
A: I actually coach at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York. Seven-time national champions!
Q: How did you receive the opportunity to go to the Olympics?
A: I have been a member of the NBA Fan Patrol for 3 years now, performing at different events and All-Star games all over the country. This is my first international trip with the NBA.
Q: How did it feel to represent our country?
A: LOL, it always feels great performing in front of people.
Q: What types of performances were you involved in?
A:We performed choreographed routines at different time-outs. We also threw out T-shirts to the fans and got the crowd pumped up.
Q: How does GTM have an impact on your role as a performer and coach?
A: GTM is great because I can talk cheer and gymnastics all day long to my customers to build rapport. When the customer can talk to you about their studio or team in real talk, they love it because, as a rep, I understand them.
Q: What are your future performance plans?
A: I’m hoping to perform in October for the preseason Europe/Asia tour. The NBA is sending six teams to play three games in three different cities. They may send NBA Fan Patrol again so I am praying I get called.
