Congratulations to Edward Cheserek, GTM Sportswear’s Athlete of the Year for the 2011 – 2012 school year.
Each month six “Athlete of the Month” finalists are selected by the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) and presented via ballot to a group of high school sports writers, high school coaches and NHSCA and GTM Sportswear representatives to choose a winner. Out of the eight recipients of the monthly award, one athlete is chosen as the GTM Sportswear Athlete of the Year.
Cheserek, a high school senior track and cross country runner from St. Benedicts’ Prep in Newark N.J., aspires to run successfully in college and in the Olympics. Cheserek was voted the NHSCA and GTM Sportswear Athlete of the Month for October 2011 and is now the recipient of GTM Sportswear’s Athlete of the Year award for the 2011 – 2012 school year.
Edward Cheserek said relocating to the U.S. from Kenya has been a big change but it hasn’t stopped him from winning several national championships in individual and relay track events. Cheserek ran the second-fastest indoor 5,000 meters by a high school student, 13:57.04, this year.
He attributed his positive attitude and athletic success to the motivation and encouragement he receives from his coaches and other athletes.
“Winning multiple championships makes me feel good to be one of the best in the country,” he said.
GTM is proud to work with NHSCA to sponsor the Athlete of the Month and Athlete of the Year programs and student athletes like Edward.
“Edward is an outstanding example of what a leader and student athlete should represent,” said Jana Thomas, multi-media advertising manager at GTM Sportswear. “We are honored to be able to present the GTM Sportswear Athlete of the Year Award to Edward in response to his commitment and dedication to his sport, his team and his community.”
