Small Town, Big Impact: GTM Sportswear Sponsors Hoops for Hope Charity Basketball Game

On October 26, 2012, the small town of Coldwater, Kansas was host to its fourth annual “Hoops for Hope” charity women’s basketball game. GTM Sportswear was honored to be part of such an important event.

The WEPAC Alliance is a local foundation that pays for cancer-preventive care for women in five Kansas communities: Wilmore, Englewood, Protection, Ashland and Coldwater and two hospitals in the area. GTM has worked with WEPAC to provide the uniforms for the Hoops for Hope event game since its origin in 2008.

“I almost get choked up when I talk about GTM,” said Kim Hazen, president of WEPAC. “At one point, we were planning to make our own uniforms, but GTM has provided the basketball uniforms and more for the fourth year now. It makes me so proud to see the GTM logo on the shirts as people from our communities wear them all year long.”

Each team consisted of three high school and three alumni female basketball players from the area and ten celebrity players and coaches including Olympian Marion Jones, Olympic coach Billie Moore and WNBA athlete Jackie Stiles.

This year, inside sales representative Tricia Gose stepped up to ensure the teams were outfitted in GTM’s best. Both teams wore GTM’s Game Time uniform, the cheerleaders wore GTM’s tees and ticket entry to the game came with an event tee provided by GTM.

90 percent of proceeds from the event go to the WEPAC Alliance to fund cancer-preventive care (digital

Mammograms, pap smears and colonoscopies) for women. Ten percent of the proceeds go to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund®.

“To date, over $120,000 has been raised,” said Benjamin Anderson, CEO of Ashland Health Center. “That money has been used to help pay for over 700 cancer-preventive screenings. In the last 18 months, those screenings have led to at least nine cancer diagnoses.”

GTM outside sales representative Matt Sims was there to represent GTM.

“It was a great experience,” Matt said. “It’s amazing how appreciative the communities are of what GTM does for the event. This sponsorship is a little different than most as the event is held to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer in the surrounding communities. At the same time, these five towns get together for one night as one team to rally against this disease.”
